After almost missing the start of our last race, we made sure we arrived in plenty of time for this race. We selected this race because the Get Well Gabby Foundation is raising money for pediatric cancer research. Gabby was a 5 year old little girl who lost her battle with brain cancer just 63 days after her diagnosis. This September marked the 1 year anniversary of her passing. Her parents, John and Carolynn, set up this foundation to raise money for childhood cancer research as well as to carry on the memory of their beautiful daughter. We had the opportunity to meet Gabby's parents at the race.

Pre-race warm ups were super fun and much needed after our 6 hour drive in the car the day before :) It was a beautiful sunny day for the race and were thankful the race started at 9am so it wasn't too hot. This course was our most challenging course of our 4 for this trip and was mostly a cross-country course with a few parts on a paved path.

Even though we had an early start, it heated up fast and we were thankful for the cold water at the water stations to dump on our heads! We huffed and puffed our way to the finish line with a time of 30:44. Hannah finished 3rd in her age group and was thankful for the post-race stretching by a local chiropractor!

Hannah was asked by the Get Well Gabby Foundation to be their ambassador for Alaska! As we run our future races around the United States, we are going to take the story of Gabby with us to spread the word about this Foundation for pediatric cancer research. When we planned this trip, we selected hotels close to the race starts and our hotel in Stamford was 3 miles from the race start according to Google maps. We left the hotel about 45 minutes before race start because..."It couldn't take more than 15 minutes to get there." Well, we thankfully made it to this race, but it took us almost 45 minutes to travel the 3 miles to get there. You could tell that Stamford was a very old town that had grown into a very LARGE city and unfortunately, downtown Stamford was not designed to accommodate large amounts of traffic. Most of the city is 1 lane traffic, but the view at the Cove was well worth it.
Thankfully we arrived about 5 minutes before the race start and they ended up starting the race about 15 minutes late. We had enough time to get our bibs on and get a couple of pictures.
We walked over with the race participants to the race start and off we went. This race went around the park at the cove and we made 3 laps around the park to complete this race. Mom really liked this race because she was able to get pictures of us on the race course while we were running.
Hannah really pushed it for this race and came out with a 1st place finish in her age group with a time of 27:56, a whole TWO minutes faster than our time for the night before. The age group for this race was even 19 & under! Hannah got a super cool medal and award for her finish. She was given a set of coins from the US Mint, which we actually visited on the last day of our trip in Philadelphia.
We arrived in Danvers in the afternoon after visiting Plymouth Rock and the Mayflower II. This race was an evening race with a race start of 7'ish and very much reminded us of the Bonny Sosa race series in Anchorage. They were telling us that they hold this race 52 weeks a year rain, snow, or shine. There was a large turnout for this race and a huge number of 1st time participants.

After all of our walking around New York and Massachusetts, we are pretty sore, so we made sure to do plenty of stretching before this race.

The race began just as the sun was beginning to set. The open course followed sidewalks down the streets of the neighborhood and the sidewalks had many cracks and roots, which made running in the dark interesting. I kept telling Hannah that we had to run fast enough to stay in view of people who knew the course because this was also an unmarked course :) We finished this race with a time of 29:22 and Hannah was the first kiddo to cross the finish line.
After a long flight and a 3 hour drive from the Philadelphia airport, we made it to our hotel and crashed into bed. We were all thankful for an 11am start time for our race the next morning. We didn't know what to expect for parking so we elected to take a taxi cab to the fair. What a gorgeous sunny day we had for the race.

This race followed the Boardwalk along Coney Island and Brighton Beach. It was a beautiful setting to run in. We lined up at 11am for the start and off we went. Although this was a flat course, we had to watch our feet as there were some wobbly boards on the boardwalk. Thankfully neither of us tripped, but we saw another lady trip ahead of us.

Unfortunately, I had forgotten to charge my GPS watch before the race and it died about 1 mile into the race. We reached the second turn-a-round at the Aquarium after what seemed like more than a mile. The sun was out in full force and made for a HOT run. We threw some water on us to cool off at one of the water stations and were ready for the finish line. Hannah was the second kid to cross the finish line with time of 30:05.
After our awesome race at the Run for Women, Hannah and I were ready to take on the Mayors Run! Our goal was to beat our last year's time of 55:19. We almost missed the start of the race because we thought we started after the 1/2 marathon started. Luckily, we got up to the start and asked someone just in case! The countdown complete and we were off.

We got off to a really fast start, and boy was this a big field this year. It took about 2 minutes before everyone had thinned out enough to not be elbow to elbow. We ran the first 2 miles in the blaring sun, so it was a relief to get into the shade. When we got to the drink station at mile 2, I took a drink of my water and threw the rest onto Hannah's head. She squealed and said, "THAT felt GOOD!!" Seemed to cool her off enough to regain some energy. Mile 2.5 to 4.5 was in the shade, so we were able to stay on pace. Hannah was doing awesome and many racers were cheering her on along the way. At mile 4 we reached another drink station. Tossed some more water on us to cool down again before we started the killer mile up hill at the end of the race.

We reached the top of the hill and we were both wishing another drink station was waiting for us. BUT the end was near...Hannah beat me in the last two races right at the end as she usually has energy stored for the last stretch. Good thing I didn't wait too long in that last stretch as she finished two seconds behind me for a finish time of 52:36. Hannah was 1st place in her age group! Much to my surprise, I finished 8th in my age group. Uncle Greg ran the 1/2 marathon again and finished 16th overall. It was a great run for everyone, but boy was it hot. Hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11654921223247104736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448277193784891336.post-21688364097949746462012-06-16T23:45:00.000-08:002012-09-21T05:17:29.876-08:00Run for Women - Anchorage, AlaskaThe Alaska Run for Women is one of our favorite runs because there is pink EVERYWHERE! After the Twilight 12K, we were ready for this run. It's only 5 miles :) Hannah set her time goal for this race as 45 minutes, which is a very reasonable goal I was hopeful to meet.

We weaved our way close to the starting line as this was not a mat to mat timed race. This means everyone's time starts at the same time even if you are a quarter mile from the start line, which is quite possible in a race with 2000 other women running with you! We were off at 8:45am and had a slower start than usual. Hannah was dragging and I later learned she decided she was not going to eat breakfast. Need food for that running body :) Once we got to the coastal trail, I set our pace at a 9 minute mile so we could stay on track to meet our coarse goal of 45 minutes. Hannah needed some moral support so we ran holding hands for about a mile and a half.

We reached mile 3 at about 27:45, not bad! Mile 3 to 4 was the hardest, but once we got to 4, Hannah got a second wind. She pushed it the last half mile and beat me AGAIN by about 20 seconds. Hannah finished in 45:55, which put her average race pace at 9:11. She made her goal and we were soooo excited! This time was 5 minutes faster than last year, but her age group field was much larger this year. Her time placed her 4th and boy were there some fast runners in her age group. These girls are going to be her competition when she gets into Junior High and High School. Good job girls keep it up!Hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11654921223247104736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448277193784891336.post-77755474735039650262012-06-04T18:16:00.000-08:002012-09-21T05:17:38.268-08:00Eagle River Triathlon - Eagle River, AlaskaWow! It's hard to believe this is the third year Hannah and I have done this event together. This event was the first race we did together and marks two years of training. We have both come so far! Hannah continues to learn and grow as a runner. She still loves running just as much as when we first started. We are now going to increase our weekly mileage. Our goal for this year is to run 400 miles. We have some catching up to do since our mileage decreased at the end of my pregnancy. I can't wait to see if we can beat her personal best of 27:15 for a 5K.

Hannah has been taking swimming lessons and rocked the first leg of the race. Grandpa rode the bike with Hannah while I waited at the transition to finish the run with her. After running the 12K 2 days earlier, the run was like running with lead weights for legs for both of us. We made it to the finish though! This is such a fun event for the kids and the race organizers do a great job. Thanks again for another awesome year!Hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11654921223247104736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448277193784891336.post-21696733442692345342012-06-01T13:49:00.000-08:002012-07-21T23:44:43.928-08:00Twilight 12K - Anchorage, Alaska

This race was our first competitive race of the season...My sister told
me that Hannah decided she wanted to do the 12K because the boy she
really enjoys running with in the Bonny Sosa series was running the
12K. I asked Nicole how far a 12K was and she said...I don't know, like
6 miles, so I agreed to run it! I later looked it up online and found
out it was 7.4 miles!! Oh man...Don't tell Hannah :) Time to psych
myself up for our longest run ever.
Hannah and I were so happy that the weather was better for the race than
last year. It was a sunny day with a slight breeze. Hannah and I have
always gotten close to the start line for all of our races because I
have found that we are actually safer and less likely to get trampled.
As we were lined up at the start line, some lady made a snide comment to
me about being close to the front. I just smiled and replied "we do
this all the time." The gun went off and off we went!

And we're off!

We took off hard and fast...maybe a little too fast. The cool thing
about this race was that we got to run in an area of Anchorage that we
haven't run in before, down by the port and through Government Hill. As
we were re-entering down town Anchorage (approaching mile 3) we ran
past a lady who was not feeling well. Knowing Hannah is a sympathy
barfer, I tried to get her to go by without watching. Silly child she
wouldn't take her eyes off of the lady as she passed by. Of course,
Hannah started saying "Auntie I think I am going to be sick!"
Thankfully, Hannah did not barf and we were able to change the subject.

Owen coming in for a strong finish

We then got onto the Coastal Trail, which we run on for just about every
race in Anchorage. It was nice knowing how much farther we had to go.
Hannah was really pushing it and doing awesome. We finished out the
downtown part of the coastal trail right about mile 6 when Michael
caught up to us. Hannah learned that we still had 1.5 miles left, so
the timing was perfect. Hannah enjoyed running the last part of the
race with Michael and provided the encouragement she needed to finish.
Auntie, on the other hand, was running out of steam quickly. Just one
more mile, come on, you can do it!!! Hannah passed me with a half mile
to go and finished the race right behind Michael. I finished about 20
seconds behind her. I can't believe the energy this child has at the
end of the race, which tells me she can certainly run faster :)
Justin and Owen ran the 6K for this race and Owen beat his dad! Owen finished Hannah crossed the finish line in 1:15:34. Sadly, Skinny
Raven changed their age groups and the youngest group was ages 12 and
under for this year's race. Hannah finished 8th out of 11. The top 5
finishers were ages 11 and 12. Even so, this was our longest race ever
and Hannah did AWESOME! I am so proud of her. We are starting to make
our weekly runs longer so that we can start chipping more time off of
our finishing times.
I had walked earlier that day at my work with a co-worker, then again at the ice rink with Hannah and went into labor that night :) It was our last time at the ice rink as the snow was off the road at Grama's house, so we could run outside again. Hannah and I got out for our first outdoor run 10 days after Kaelyn was born. It was slow for me, but hoping to get back up to speed for our spring and summer races. Hannah loves her new baby cousin!!
After taking a nearly 5 week running break we are excited to be back running again. We totally enjoyed our time off (2 whole glorious weeks in Jamaica and a very blessed Thanksgiving) but we really had to work to get back into race shape.

This trip proved to be quite the adventure...on our way down, I found my cell phone in my purse to be covered in water. I couldn't contact Hannah's mom until we got to the car rental place in Arizona. (A HUGE thank you to the nice car rental counter guy who let me use his personal cell phone!) On our way back, we almost lost Hannah's car seat to the Portland Airport because of the airlines mistake and then we arrived home to Alaska to awful roads and cold houses as the power had been out for over 4 hours. In bed at 2am Monday morning and Hannah was thankful to find out that school was cancelled on Monday. Fortunately, we had an awesome time at the race!

Arizona proved was much cooler than we expected and I was actually afraid we were going to be cold given our short sleeves and capris we brought to run in! We were thankful for the 9am start so we didn't have to get up really early. The temperature was about 58 degrees when we got to the race. We warmed up and stretched while we were waiting in the start chute. Since I have been running slightly slower than Hannah as I have progressed in my pregnancy, I gave Hannah a heads up about the turn around at the half way point so she didn't continue on the 10K course. At 9am, we were off!

Hannah was keeping a pretty good pace and chit-chatted with a couple ladies as she ran as she usually does :) Since this was an Iron Girl race, all racers were women. As we neared the turn around, I was watching to see Hannah go around the corner so I could cheer her on. I was watching and watching and she didn't go by. I realized OH MAN...SHE'S ON THE 10K COURSE!! There was no way I was going to be able to catch up with her. I gave the race volunteers a description of her clothes and waited minute, then kept going for the finish. About 2 minutes later I hear from behind me...AUNTIE...I looked behind me and breathed a huge sigh of relief! She told me that she asked someone if she was still on the 5K course. When they said 10K, she turned around and headed back to the turn around. Good thing I told her about the turn around! I was super proud of her...she is getting to be quite the good little racer.
I told Hannah she needed to push it to the finish and she took off. I crossed the finish line about a minute behind Hannah and found her waiting for me at the finish just like she was supposed to :) Hannah finished in 28:29 which was good enough for 1st place in her age group! We got awesome medals for this race and Hannah received an Iron Girl necklace charm. This will be our last out of state race until I have my baby (due April 4th), but we will still be running in town until then. I found my self impatiently awaiting the local running calendar so we can begin planning our spring and summer races!
Next up, dinner at the American Girl Bistro thanks to Grandma's birthday gift to Hannah. Did I mention that she is now 8 years old....I can't believe how fast time has gone :) Hannah's American Girl dolls got to join us at the table in their own special high chairs. The food was excellent and so was the service!

We got on the road to head to Wichita Falls about 5pm. After figuring out the GPS was on pedestrian mode instead of driving mode, we got on the right track. We crashed into bed at the hotel about 9pm. We were up at 6am, had breakfast, and headed to the race. Sue, the race director for this race, had already alerted the registration table to our arrival. We were sure shown some Texan hospitality for this race! The race started at 8:45am and we were off. It was a hot muggy morning and felt just like our run in Florida. Hannah chit-chatted with a couple of ladies during the race. We also had a couple of ladies recognize us from checking out our blog :)
Hannah finished the race in 28:36, and was about 30 seconds in front of me. She didn't place in this race because the youth age group was 18 and under, but I don't think there were too many little ones in front of her. We will have to check out the official results for a count.
After the race, many people wanted to take our picture, and two little girls asked to have a picture taken with Hannah. It was sooooo sweet! We were also interviewed by the local newspaper and thanked by the Mayor for selecting their race for our Texas race. The best part was the stage introduction and the banner that Hannah received it said....DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS!
Hannah and I both left the race feelings so welcomed and thankful that we chose such a supportive and amazing race to participate in. We left the race right before a storm hit and are now at our next hotel to go to the Taylor Swift concert at the Cowboy's Stadium. Should be so much fun!
Hannah and I were hoping for a new personal record from this race. The weather forecast was looking pretty gloomy, but when we arrived in Anchorage, it was pretty and the skies were clear.

Another nice thing about this race is the 5K starts at 9:30am. It was quite the ordeal trying to make a potty stop a the port-a-potties before the race began as people were lined up across the start line. Many marathon and half-marathoners didn't get to potty before their race began. After they were off, Hannah and I got to line up. It's been kinda cool to get to move closer and closer to the front as we get faster. We lined up at the 8 minute mile sign for this race.

Uncle Greg, Justin, Auntie Shauna, and Owen joined us for the 5K this year! The gun went off, and off we went. Hannah and I passed her dad before mile 1 and he couldn't believe it! The first mile went really fast, but again, my GPS watch died within 3 minutes of starting the race. Hannah caught up to one of her friends they camp with in Willow and she kept pace with him for most of the race. After mile 2, I started to get pretty tired (I am pregnant with my second kiddo due in early April) and Hannah was in front of me for the rest of the race. Hannah kept looking back to check on me, which was pretty funny.

Hannah rounded the final corner to the finish and that was the last I saw of her till I crossed the finish line. She couldn't believe that she beat me and her dad. Hannah finished with her fastest time of 27:15, which put her in 3rd place for the 12 and under age group! First and second were 11 and 12 years old. Uncle Greg got 2nd place overall and Auntie Shauna and Owen finished in 38 minutes.
We were lucky to have a rain free race as it poured down rain most of the time we were in Seward. The race started at 12:00pm, so we also got to sleep in which was super nice! There were several kids running this race, but overall, the race crowd seemed smaller than last year.

Hannah and I were excited to get to the turn around point and head back for the finish. There was an older girl that we kept catching up to about the last half mile, but every time we caught up, she took off running again. We were shocked at how well we did when we saw our time at the finish.
Hannah, Justin, and I ran the 5.6 mile run (AKA 5 miler), Auntie Shauna and Owen ran the 1.7 mile kids race, and Uncle Greg ran the Half Marathon (13.1 miles).

The Half Marathon and 5 miler runners started together at 9am and was warm, but not too hot. Justin ran with Hannah and I for a while to make sure my leg was going to hold up for the race; however, if my leg was going fail, I figured it might be around mile 4...The first two miles went by really fast, but boy did mile 3 go by slow. When Hannah and I reached mile 4, she got her second wind. Many people recognized us from our other races and we even ran into one of our blog followers...Hannah just loves that :)
When we crossed the finish line, Hannah asked me what our time was. I told her our time was 55:18 and she said, "awww that's slower than our last time." When I told her the race was 5.6 miles, she squealed and started jumping up and down. Hannah finished 1st place in her age group of 9 and under!
Auntie Shauna and Owen finished the kids race in 22 minutes. Hannah finished the same race last year in 23 minutes so we might just have another little up and coming runner....way to go Owen!!! Uncle Greg finished the half marathon in 1:26:46, which placed him 17th overall out of 1800! It was a great race for everyone :)
The morning was absolutely beautiful and we were happy to not freeze before the race began. We got to wear our pink and black tutus made by Michele at krazykidlets and we fit right in with the Run for Women's pink theme! Hannah was so anxious to start and checked my watch a thousand times to see how much longer till the race began. We also really loved how people decorated the port a potties with fabulous pink these...they were fit for a queen! Who knew they could be so luxurious :)

We were off at 8:45am. In the first mile we ran into our friend Adele George and chatted for a little while. We were by Weschester Lagoon by mile 2. I found I had to do a lot more turning around to see Hannah, which was not fun for my knee. Hannah was a little more tired than usual and was surprised when I told her we were only at the 5k point. About 4 1/2 miles, we were both really pushing it for the finish.
We finished our first 5 mile race in 50:10!!!
Hannah earned 5th place for her age group. Only one 7 year old was ahead of her, and the rest were 10 year olds.
Nicole, Shauna, and I did the triathlon relay the morning of the kids triathlon. Nicole swam and was the unfortunate victim of a violent lane partner who kicked her twice! She was thankful to be able to finish her swim get out of the pool. I did the bike leg and realized 2 minutes in that I had not eaten enough the night before. Thankfully, my thoughtful sister got me some power gel snacks that helped me survive. Shauna was up for the running leg, which was her very first run without Owen. She was able to power through the pouring rain and bring it in to the finish! Team Three Sisters was excited to finish in under 2 hours :)
The whole crew came for the kids triathlon, which was to start at 2pm. We stood in the sweltering pool area and cheered the final adult racers out of the pool. Hannah, Owen, and their friend Maddie were able to wait together for their test swim.
Hannah and Owen did the "long" kids triathlon which was 2 laps at the swimming pool, about 2 miles on the bike, and I'm sure a 2 mile run. I believe the run was longer than they said it was supposed to be. Owen got to do the bike portion with Grandpa and the run portion with Auntie Shauna. This was Owen's first triathlon and he was pretty excited about his finish.
Hannah mastered the 2 swim laps and once she got out of the pool, she had her competitive game on. "Come on Auntie, let's go!" and off she ran to the bike transition.

We got her changed as quickly as you can when you are a wet kiddo. She was definitely more prepared for the bike this year as she practiced the course several times with Grandpa. Hannah was kinda nervous with the cones and all the other people that were on the bike course with us, but she was able to finish the bike strong.

Up next was Hannah's favorite part: the run! We ran a windy, rocky course around the practice fields by the high school and around the back side of the building. I forgot that we were running to the bridge by the highway and both Hannah and I were disappointed when we had to turn and run the opposite direction of the finish line. We finally got to the turn-around and headed back towards the finish. Hannah kicked it into high gear and finished with a sprint. Our time was about 35 minutes.
The Eagle River Triathlon marked the 1 year anniversary of Hannah and I beginning our running together and it was a happy day. What a long way we have both come and can't wait to see where Hannah's running leads us next :)
Hannah and I geared up for our first "long" race of the year with the Skinny Raven Skinny Mini 6K in Anchorage. The weather was a mixture of clouds and sun and thankfully we didn't get rained on during the race. Hannah was pumped up to run this race and at 7pm we were off. The first mile went really fast as we ran it in about 8 minutes. We were able to maintain about a 9 minute mile pace for the whole race. About 2 1/2 miles into the race, I looked behind me to check where Hannah was, and there she was chit-chatting with another lady as she was running. I started laughing and told Hannah to catch up with me. She told the lady, "Gotta go" and started running faster to catch up. The last mile was pretty tough as most of it was uphill. Many people cheered Hannah on and told her how good she was doing. We didn't know until we crossed the finish line how well she really did. Hannah was the very first kiddo under age 12 to cross the finish line. Our time was 34:11, which was good enough for Hannah's very first age group 1st place finish!! She was soooo excited!
I have been dealing with IT band syndrome and am trying to stave it off so we can run our very first 5 mile race at the Run for Women. We can't wait to run with a group of more than 6,000 women. On June 11th you can check us out wearing our pink and black tutus made by our friend Michele at Krazykidlets https://www.facebook.com/#!/krazykidlets :)
Hannah and I had quite the crew joining us for the Heart Run. Auntie Shauna and Owen were going to run the 1.3 mile kids run and Justin (daddy) was joining us for the 5K. Nicole (mommy) came as cheerleader for all. Hannah wanted this race to be our fastest race ever and we were hoping to finish in about 27 minutes. Hannah and I lined up at the very front to avoid being caught in the race congestion typical at the beginning of races. The gun went off and off we went. Hannah was in high gear the first quarter mile and was running a 6:30 mile pace, we slowed down a little and finished our first mile in 8 minutes. Our second mile we finished in 9 minutes, and our third mile was about 10 minutes for an overall time of 27:35...our fastest time ever! That last quarter mile sure as a killer for both of us and we were both happy to be done.
Justin finished about 1 minute in front of us. Auntie Shauna and Owen started their race just as Hannah and I finished. After about 30 minutes we started to wonder where they were. They finally came across the finish line and all of the cheerleaders were frozen. It was such a cold morning and poor Nicole had forgotten her jacket and was wearing flip-flops because she had an 11:00 pedicure scheduled since it was the day before her graduation! Auntie Shauna and Owen ended up running a surprise 5K as well because the officials didn't have people turn around in the right place. Well at least they got a good work out!
When I woke up and looked at the temperature, it was a cold COLD 10 degrees! We were both grumbling about how cold it was, but we were still ready to race. By the time the race started at 10am, it warmed up to 17/18 degrees which felt surprisingly better :)

The sun was shining and we could even feel a bit of warmth from it...yay for spring!!!! Everyone waited inside until the very last minute, and the race people had to tell everyone it was time to head to the start line. We walked out as a group, had a brief introduction to the course, and we were off!
This race reminded us of the Jingle Bell 5K we did back in December as we were running on a lot of snow. Hannah and I were huffing and puffing just 10 minutes after beginning our run. When we reached the 2 mile mark, I realized the race had been shortened due poor trail conditions and now was not a 5K! We crossed the finish line in 25:15 and the race ended up being 2.16 miles, not bad for a snow-covered trail. Hannah was the only kiddo running this race and many people cheered her on as we ran. We are looking forward to running the UAA Spring Break Up run on April 9th!
I repacked for our trip to Kansas the next day. We set out at 10am on Friday for the 4 1/2 hour drive to Overbrook, Kansas. Quite the undertaking with a 7 year old and a 1 year old :) We ended up driving through a midwest thunder and lightning storm for 1 1/2 hours. It was raining so hard that we had to yell to each other in the car just to communicate! We could even hear the thunder over the rain while driving down the interstate. This was Hannah's first time seeing lightning.

We went to the new American Girl store in Kansas before going to pick up our bibs. The ladies at the American Girl store gave Hannah a cool poster, calendar, and magazine. They loved hearing her talk about running her races. I think Hannah wants to visit all of the American Girl Doll Stores...good thing we plan on running in all 50 states.

The race coordinator was distributing bibs and was so excited that we had chosen the Truffle Shuffle as our Kansas race. It is always fun to share our 5K in 50 state mission with the people we meet at each race!

Saturday, the morning of our race was a blustery 22 degrees. We also had cold midwest winds blowing through. Hannah and I geared up in every layer we brought and prayed it was going to be enough. Having just come from running in Florida, the 22 degree weather seemed really cold. Our black and pink tutus sure got us a lot of attention! Everyone was asking us how many states we have done and where we are from. The people at this race were so friendly. We trecked out into the cold at 8:30am, and off we went.

There was a little girl wearing blue and pink who was our pace setter for a while. Hannah would pass her, then she would pass us. We passed her and stayed in front a little past the second mile. The last quarter mile was tough as our faces and legs were getting numb and cold.

Hannah and I crossed the finish line in 32:33 while the DJ (named BJ) announced us crossing the finish line! We were glad to be done and go inside to thaw out. More people came to talk to us after the race and to tell Hannah good job in the race. The race coordinators gave both Hannah and I a gift certificate for Road ID. We had a lot of fun at this race and are so glad we picked it to be our Kansas race.

Hannah was in a large age group for this race, females ages 15 & under. Having only recently arrived in Florida and having to adjust to the 4 hour time difference we all wanted to stay in bed that early in the morning! Our race started at 7am outside of Epcot and the temperature was about 70 degrees. Besides the humidity, it was a nice morning for a run. This was the first race Auntie Jennie has run with the gps watch she got for Christmas. It was really nice to be able to tell how far we had run, as well as keep track of our mile pace.

This race had Disney Princesses posted along the race course cheering us on. We saw Pocahontas, Jasmine, Aurora (Sleeping Beauty), Belle, & Cinderella. Hannah was excited to see all the Princesses, but she was most excited when we ran past a squirrel! Gotta love Hannah :) Everyone loved our Pink & Black Tutus (A special thank you to Krazykidlets for making our tutus). Hannah kicked it into high gear for the last quarter mile of our run for a personal best 5k time of 28:32!!

Hannah and Jennie were not the only racers of the day, nor was the 5K the only race Hannah ran that day! While we were running, a lady also running at the ice rink said that we inspired her to start running. We were so excited to hear her say that because that's one of the biggest reasons why we have our 5K in 50 States vision; to inspire people to become active. We see many people at the ice rink on a regular basis who cheer Hannah on while we run and it always adds a spring to our steps :)

Hannah and I have set a goal to run the 5 mile Anchorage Women's Run and the 5 mile Mayors Run in June. To train for these runs, the plan was to increase our Sunday run by a 1/2 mile each month until June. We started running 3.5 miles two weeks ago, and today Hannah decided she wanted to run 4 miles, which we finished in 37:33. It so hard to believe that Hannah ran her first 5K only 5 1/2 months ago and her time was 42 minutes...how far she has come.

Due to all of this icy and cold weather Hannah has now started getting a bit of running in on the treadmill. She seems to enjoy the novelty of the treadmill so it is a great way to get some running in without having to leave the house.
Jr. Nordic Skiing has been quite a learning experience but still fun. Hannah finally got the hang of skiing and learned the "running" trick that all the other kids do. She has enjoyed skiing a lot more now that she is able to stay with the group more. I am hoping that the skiing will work as sort of a cross training during the winter months for next winter and beyond.
For Christmas, Hannah's grandma (AKA Grammy Farr) got her a medal hanger for her collection of medals from races. The medal hanger is from Allied Running Medal Hangers; they were wonderful to work with and I would highly recommend them! It is super cute and bright pink and Hannah cannot wait to fill it up with her medals.
We are kicking our training into high gear since our next out of state race is in 6 weeks. Look out Disneyworld and the Princess 5K here we come!!!Hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11654921223247104736noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448277193784891336.post-20211583048127064822010-12-19T14:00:00.001-09:002010-12-19T14:00:38.846-09:00Winter Training and SkiingHannah and I are continuing to run at the Harry J Ice Rink for our winter training. In addition to our running, we are cross-country skiing on Mondays and Wednesdays with Junior Nordic Skiing. We have been having a blast. Skiing was cancelled this whole last week because it has been too cold. We are very thankful to have the ice rink to run at. :)

Last week Hannah asked me if she could run with her ipod at the ice rink, so Tuesday was her first time running with the ipod. When I looked at my watch after we finished our run, I was shocked. We had finished our 3 mile run in 28:30!! Our fastest 3 mile run yet. Between running with the big kids, and running with the ipod, Hannah dropped a whole minute off her time! Saturday was another test of the ipod theory. Hannah ran that 3 mile run in 28:28! We ran the first mile in 9 minutes, the second in 10 minutes, and the third in 9 minutes. We were bummed when we went to the rink to run today and the ipod hadn't charged properly. I'm not quite sure what our time was because my watch stopped during the run and I had to restart it. We're looking forward to our next run to see how fast we can go!Hannahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11654921223247104736noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8448277193784891336.post-18528508048795445752010-12-19T14:00:00.000-09:002010-12-19T14:00:10.998-09:00Jingle Bell 5KThis weekend called for a winter blizzard, so we were thankful that there was only 4 inches of snow when we woke up Saturday morning! However, I was a little concerned about the condition of the Coastal Trail. We arrived at the Snow Goose and got to visit with several people we ran with in the Bonny Sosa races.
There was about 2 inches of snow of snow on the trail and several parts had snow over our ankles. Hannah and I were only 4 minutes into the race and I knew we were in for a tough run. Hannah only fell one time when we were running through the deep part. One lady behind us said that for every inch of snow, you can add a mile to your run. I think she just might have been right! Hannah and I agreed that this run was harder than any Kincaid race we have done thus far.
